This work responds to a void that exists in Puerto Rican historiography on the development of tobacco on the island. Most of the studies on this subject are unpublished or are small syntheses in books of economic and general history. The work was designed as a historical look at tobacco in Puerto Rico. Primary and secondary sources were used to try to build a concise vision of the historical panorama of this crop. The first part of the writing, the current volume, includes the period that develops among those who were our first inhabitants, the Amerindians, until the 18th century. This volume seeks to offer a vision of the internal panorama and the external effects that affected tobacco cultivation and trade at various levels. What will be the second volume of this publication will cover the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries? In it, the local aspects that revolved around the particularities of the tobacco product will be presented. The focus of our research is to publicize in a general way the history of tobacco in Puerto Rico. We hope that the research carried out will delight the reader, while it develops awareness of the importance of tobacco in the economic development of our Island.
